Don Wilson held world titles under several sanctioning bodies and across multiple weight classes, which in the fragmented American scene of the 1980s required beating the recognised champion of each. That fragmentation is the era's defining feature — there was no single title, so a fighter's standing rested on how many of the competing ones they had collected.
His record is one of the strongest of the American era, and unlike many of his contemporaries he fought well into the period when leg kicks were being adopted, adapting rather than retiring when the rules changed underneath him.
He also had a substantial film career, which along with Urquidez gave American kickboxing a public visibility its competitive structure never earned on its own.
