Francisco Filho

Francisco Filho won the 2000 K-1 World Grand Prix and is the clearest Brazilian expression of the Kyokushin-to-K-1 pipeline. He arrived from knockdown karate — where he was a formidable competitor — with the body attack that discipline builds and the head-movement gap it leaves.

His Grand Prix win came in a field that included the Dutch establishment, and it demonstrated that the Kyokushin route into the promotion was not merely ceremonial. Along with Andy Hug and Glaube Feitosa, he is the reason the knockdown-karate lineage is taken seriously in kickboxing rather than treated as a curiosity.

His relatively short professional kickboxing record reflects a career largely spent in karate competition, where his reputation was made before K-1 existed.
