The one piece of equipment with no argument attached. It protects teeth, prevents the jaw fractures and lacerations that come from a closed mouth being struck, and is required for any contact under every ruleset on this site.
What to look for
A boil-and-bite guard fitted carefully is adequate and costs almost nothing. A dentist-fitted guard fits better, stays in place under impact and lasts years, which makes the cost reasonable if you compete. Replace any guard that has been bitten through or no longer seats firmly — a loose guard is close to no guard. Rinse it after use and store it dry.
