Mirko Filipović built a K-1 career on a single technique executed better than anyone else of his size: the left high kick from a southpaw stance. The phrase that followed him — right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery — was marketing, but it described something real, because the kick genuinely ended fights outright rather than accumulating damage.
As a southpaw against orthodox heavyweights, his left kick travelled to the open side, where the opponent's guard is weakest and their vision is most obstructed by their own lead shoulder. He set it up with a left cross on the same line, which is the same pairing principle Pereira later used with the hook.
He is best known globally for his mixed martial arts career, but the K-1 years are where the technique was built, and his bouts against Hoost and Le Banner remain among the most instructive southpaw-versus-orthodox tape in the heavyweight archive.
