Rick Roufus
Elite American full-contact striker whose most famous night proved what a ruleset without leg kicks leaves undeveloped.
Rick Roufus is remembered internationally for a fight he lost. His 1988 bout against Changpuek Kiatsongrit was contested under rules permitting leg kicks — something Roufus, an outstanding American full-contact fighter, had never had to defend. He was ahead on the hands and then could not stand.
That result is the standard teaching example for why the low kick matters, and it did more than any argument to move the American scene toward adopting it. The important point is that Roufus was not outclassed as an athlete; he had simply never needed to check a kick, because under his home ruleset nobody was allowed to throw one.
He adapted afterwards, fought on for another two decades including in K-1, and the Roufusport gym he founded became one of the most productive striking camps in American combat sports.
