Long Guard
Lange dekking · การ์ดยาว
The long guard extends the lead arm toward the opponent's face with the elbow slightly bent and the palm turned in, creating a physical frame between the two fighters. It is a defensive structure rather than a strike, and its job is to occupy the space an opponent needs in order to close.
Against a pressure fighter it does three things at once: it obstructs the vision, it measures the distance so the fighter behind it always knows exactly where the opponent is, and it provides something to push off when creating angles. Against a shorter opponent trying to work inside, it is often the difference between fighting at your range and fighting at theirs.
Its weakness is the body and the legs. An extended lead arm cannot also protect the ribs or check a low kick, so a fighter who over-relies on the long guard gets taken apart underneath it — which is why it is a phase rather than a stance. It goes up to stop an entry, and comes down the moment the range is restored.
Key points
- Extend the lead arm with a slight bend, palm turned inward toward the opponent
- Use it to obstruct vision and measure range simultaneously
- Push off it to create angles rather than simply retreating in a straight line
- Drop it as soon as range is restored — it cannot protect the body or check a kick
- Particularly effective against shorter pressure fighters trying to get inside
Common mistakes
- Holding it up as a permanent stance, which leaves the body and legs undefended
- Extending the arm straight and locking the elbow, which invites it to be pushed aside or attacked
- Retreating in a straight line behind it instead of using it to angle off
- Letting the rear hand drift while the lead arm is extended
Drills
- 1Pressure drill: partner walks the fighter down, who must use the long guard to stop the entry and angle off
- 2Range drill: maintain contact with the long guard while circling, without being touched
- 3Transition drill: long guard up to stop the entry, down into a normal guard as range is restored
