Hand wraps
- Typical price
- €8–20
The gloves protect the person you hit. The wraps protect the small bones and ligaments in your own hand, and they are the cheapest injury prevention in the sport. Training without them because the gloves feel fine is how people acquire long-term hand problems.
What to look for
Traditional 4.5 m semi-elastic cotton wraps do the job and cost almost nothing. Quick-wraps are convenient and support the wrist less well. Wrap the wrist first, then between the fingers, then across the knuckles, and keep it snug rather than tight — if your fingers tingle it is too tight. Wash them; unwashed wraps are the main reason gym bags smell.
At a glance
- 4.5 m semi-elastic covers most hand sizes
- Wrist support matters more than knuckle padding
- Snug, not tight — tingling fingers means start again
- Machine washable, and should be washed after every session
