Branko Cikatić won the first K-1 World Grand Prix in 1993, which makes him the answer to the sport's most-asked trivia question and a genuinely significant figure: the inaugural tournament had to be won by someone convincing enough to establish that the format meant something.
He was an aggressive, physically imposing fighter from the pre-specialisation era, when heavyweight kickboxers came from karate, boxing and street backgrounds rather than a developed system. That first tournament win over a field including Ernesto Hoost gave K-1 the credibility it needed in its opening year.
His career sits almost entirely before the Dutch method became the division's default, which makes him a useful marker for how much the sport's technical standard rose in the decade that followed.
