Mike Bernardo

Mike Bernardo was a boxer-heavyweight in the K-1 field, and for a period in the late 1990s his hands were the most dangerous in the division. He beat Peter Aerts more than once, which very few fighters managed, and did it by refusing to fight the kicking battle at all — closing distance and making it a punching fight where his boxing background told.

That approach carried an obvious cost. A heavyweight who walks through kicking range to reach punching range takes leg kicks to get there, and against the best low-kickers of the era that arithmetic eventually catches up. His career reads as a series of demonstrations that pure hand speed and power can beat technical kicking on any given night, and that it is a hard way to build a decade.

He died in 2012, and remains one of the most fondly remembered fighters of K-1's strongest period.
