The Dutch pad method, and what it is actually training
Long rounds, high volume, no reset between elements. The method is not about fitness — it is about removing the decision point in the middle of a combination.

What the method is for
The Dutch pad round is usually described as conditioning work, and that description misses the point. Its purpose is automaticity. A fighter who has to decide, mid-combination, whether to add the low kick will telegraph it or skip it. A fighter who has thrown the same chain ten thousand times throws the whole thing as one action. That is the entire design goal, and everything else about the method follows from it.
How a round is structured
Rounds run long — commonly three to five minutes, often longer than competition rounds — at a pace that does not allow a full recovery between combinations. The holder calls a sequence, the fighter throws it, the holder immediately calls the next. There is no pause to reset the stance, no verbal correction mid-round, and no standing still. Corrections happen between rounds, not inside them.
The holder does half the work
A Dutch pad holder is not a stationary target. They move, they counter after the combination, and they punish a dropped hand with a light shot to the head. That counter is the mechanism that keeps defence attached to offence: the fighter learns that the last punch of a chain must be followed by a return to guard, because something comes back every single time. Static pad holding produces fighters who finish combinations flat-footed with their hands down.
Where it does not apply
This method assumes a ruleset where leg kicks are legal and the clinch is broken quickly — K-1, GLORY, Dutch and low-kick rules. Under American full-contact rules there is no low kick to chain into, so the sequences change completely. Under Muay Thai rules the clinch is a scoring phase and pad work needs to feed into it rather than reset to open range. Copying Dutch pad rounds into a Muay Thai camp trains the wrong ending.
