Conditioning

Skipping rope

Typical price
€8–35

Cheap, portable, and one of the few conditioning tools that trains something the sport actually uses: elastic calf and foot stiffness, rhythm, and the ability to stay light on the feet while breathing hard. It is a warm-up in most gyms and deserves to be more than that.

What to look for

A basic PVC or leather rope is fine. Length should reach roughly to the armpits when stood on at the middle. Speed ropes are faster and less forgiving; weighted ropes train the shoulders and are largely beside the point for footwork. The training value is in the accumulated minutes, not the equipment.

At a glance

  • Trains foot and calf elasticity used in every step and pivot
  • Length to the armpits when stood on centrally
  • Basic rope is sufficient — the value is in the minutes
  • Doubles as a low-impact warm-up on heavy training days
