Why 1–2–low kick works, mechanically
The most-drilled sequence in kickboxing is not a habit or a tradition. The cross puts your body in exactly the position the low kick launches from.

The mechanical argument
Throw a cross and your rear hip rotates forward and your weight transfers onto the lead leg. That is precisely the position from which a rear low kick begins. So adding the kick costs no extra setup, no repositioning and almost no extra time — the rotation is already happening and the kick continues it. Sequences that fight this, such as trying to throw a rear low kick immediately after a rear uppercut, feel wrong because they require you to reverse a rotation and restart it.
What it does to the opponent
Hands at head level force the guard up and pull the opponent’s attention and weight forward. A leg carrying weight cannot be lifted to check. The combination therefore creates its own opening: the punches are not a distraction, they are the mechanism that loads the target.
Building chains that share a rotation
The general rule is that consecutive strikes should either continue a rotation or reverse it deliberately with a step that resets the hips. Left hook into right low kick works, because both rotate the same direction after the hook lands. Right cross into right head kick works for the same reason as the low kick version. Right cross into right cross does not, which is why doubling the rear hand needs a small step to be anything other than slow.
How many to own
Elite fighters do not use many combinations. They use a handful, from both stances, against several reactions, at a speed that makes the choice invisible. Five sequences trained to automaticity beat thirty that need thinking about. Pick the ones that suit your frame — long fighters chain from the jab and teep, shorter fighters from the hook and body shot — and drill those until they run without you.
