Questions that mostly have the same answer

A striking number of common questions about this sport resolve to “it depends which ruleset you mean”. That is not evasion — it is the actual answer, and the specifics are below.

Are knees legal in kickboxing?
Under K-1, GLORY, ONE and WAKO K-1 rules, yes. Under American full-contact, WAKO full-contact and WAKO low-kick rules, no. Under savate, no. So the honest answer is that "kickboxing" is not one code, and the question needs a rulebook attached before it can be answered.
Are elbows legal in kickboxing?
No, under every code covered on this site. Elbows are the clearest single line between kickboxing and Muay Thai, along with the clinch. K-1 removed them deliberately in 1993 so that fighters from every striking tradition could compete under one rulebook.
What is the difference between kickboxing and Muay Thai?
Two rules: elbows and the clinch. Muay Thai permits elbows and treats the clinch as a full scoring phase where fighters may work indefinitely. K-1-derived kickboxing bans elbows and breaks the clinch within a second or two. The clinch rule is the larger of the two — removing it takes out roughly a third of the sport and pushes fights back to open range, which rewards volume and footwork.
Why do some kickboxers not defend leg kicks?
Because their ruleset never required it. Under American full-contact rules nothing may be thrown below the waist, so a fighter trained exclusively in that code has no reason to develop checking and generally has not. Rick Roufus discovered this against Changpuek Kiatsongrit in 1988, and it is the clearest demonstration on record that a rulebook determines which skills a fighter ever builds.
How is a kickboxing fight scored?
Most codes use ten-point must, judged round by round: the fighter who did more damage takes 10, the other 9, and a knockdown drops the loser to 8 (7 for two). The part usually omitted is that under K-1 and GLORY rules a draw is not declared — if the cards are level an extension round is fought and scored the same way.
Do ONE and GLORY score fights the same way?
No, and the difference matters more than the rules do. GLORY scores conventionally, round by round, weighing accumulated clean and effective striking. ONE instructs judges to assess the bout as a whole and to weight near-terminal damage above accumulated landing. Under GLORY criteria a fighter ahead on volume who takes one heavy shot still wins the round; under ONE’s they may have lost the fight.
Is welterweight the same weight in every promotion?
No. Welterweight is roughly 75 kg under K-1, 77 under GLORY and closer to 84 under ONE, so two welterweight champions can be seven or eight kilos apart. Division names are not standardised, because kickboxing has no central authority. Always check the contracted limit rather than the name.
Which kickboxing style should I learn?
Start by asking which code your local gym actually fights under, because that decides what you will be good at. The Dutch method suits K-1, GLORY and low-kick rules and is the most widely taught. If you want elbows and a clinch game, you want Muay Thai rather than kickboxing. If you want a code contested in shoes with a precise long-range kicking arsenal, you want savate.
Does shin conditioning kill the nerves in your shins?
No. That explanation describes nerve damage rather than adaptation. What actually happens is bone remodelling — repeated moderate loading makes bone denser and thicker along the loaded surface — plus a real reduction in pain sensitivity from repeated exposure. Rolling bottles on your shins produces bruising, not density, and the adaptation takes years of ordinary bag and pad work.
How much hard sparring should I do?
Less than most fighters do. The evidence points toward cumulative sub-concussive impact in training being the dominant exposure in combat sports, not fights. A camp needs some competition-intensity work in the middle block; rounds beyond that carry cost without benefit. Naming the intensity out loud before each round removes most sparring injuries, which come from a mismatch of expectation.
Is kickboxing an Olympic sport?
Not currently. WAKO, which runs the largest amateur structure in the sport, holds IOC recognition and has been through provisional-recognition processes — it has the federation structure, anti-doping compliance and age categories that professional promotions lack. If kickboxing appears at an Olympics it will be the amateur, protective-equipment version, which is not the version most professional fans watch.
Can boxers beat kickboxers?
Under boxing rules, obviously. Under kickboxing rules, a trained boxer arrives with the best hands in the room and a set of footwork habits that all assume nothing will attack their legs. The lead leg becomes a target, lateral slipping runs into head kicks, and the distance at which a boxer feels safe is exactly where a round kick lands. What transfers is the hand game itself, which is why the Dutch style borrowed so much of it.
