Heavy bag

Typical price
€90–400

The single most useful piece of equipment you can own, and the one most often bought in the wrong length. A boxing-length bag ending at hip height gives you nowhere to throw a low kick, which removes the defining technique of most kickboxing codes from your home training.

What to look for

Buy a banana bag — 150–180 cm, hanging close to the floor — so low kicks, body kicks and head kicks all have a target. Weight should be roughly half your bodyweight or more; a light bag swings instead of absorbing and teaches poor mechanics. Mounting matters more than the bag: a ceiling joist or a free-standing frame, never plasterboard.

At a glance

  • 150–180 cm banana bag gives a low-kick target
  • Roughly half bodyweight minimum, or it swings
  • Mount to structure, never to plasterboard
  • Swivel and chain wear out before the bag does
